Collection: Hypoallergenic Frames

Eleven Frames With No Metal

Acetate, polycarbonate and TR90. Three plastics, and nothing metal in the front, the rims or the temples.

Five of our sixteen frames are metal, and they are not in here. The Ninox names its nickel on its own page. We would rather tell you which is which than let you find out by wearing one.

What hypoallergenic means here

It is not a promise about your skin. It is a fact about the frame. Nickel is the most common contact allergy there is, and the only way to rule a frame out as the cause is for there to be no metal in it. These eleven have none where the frame meets your face.

Every material is named on every product page, in the Specifications tab, so you never have to take our word for it. And if you are drawn to one of the metal five anyway, you have 60 days — if it is not right, we pay the return. Browse all sixteen if you would rather see everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which frames have no metal?

Eleven of the sixteen. In acetate: the Tyto, Bubo, Cyprus, Omani, Seductus, Scops and Asio. In polycarbonate: the Noctua, Otus and Pygmy. In TR90: the Phodilus. Each one names its own material in the Specifications tab on its product page.

What about the screws and hinges?

The screws are metal, coated in PTFE. They sit inside the hinge rather than against your face. We confirmed the coating with our manufacturer rather than assuming it.

Which frames are metal?

Five: the Ninox, Palau, Strix, Verraux Black and Verraux — Blue Light. The Ninox is a nickel metal frame and says so in its own description. We have not confirmed the alloy on the other four, so we do not describe any of them as hypoallergenic. When we know, we will say.
